The U.S. Just Bet $1 Billion on Quantum Chip Manufacturing
The U.S. Department of Commerce finalized up to $1 billion in CHIPS R&D funding for Anderon, an IBM quantum foundry, with IBM matching the investment. Based at Albany NanoTech, Anderon is scaling automated 300-millimeter wafer production for IBM and external customers. IBM says the line doubled development speed and increased chip complexity tenfold. Anderon will offer PDKs, customization, and IP protection, but must prove automated fabrication improves superconducting-qubit yields and attract sustained demand beyond IBM.
